any hypothesis must be set up as an if-then statement. EX: if coleus plants were given water plus calcium, then the plants will grow stronger. To conduct an experiment, two groups are set up: control group and an experimental group. In testing the hypothesis, three variables are involved: a. Independent variable – can be manipulated or changed by the researcher (there can only be one independent variable) b. Dependent variable – the observed (measured or counted) outcome of the test; what happen to the dependent variable “depends” on what is manipulated in the independent variable c. Control variables – all other variables that must remain constant during the test 5. Draw Conclusion – based on the results of your test, you can make a conclusion about the variable being tested. You will either accept or reject the hypothesis : Based on the results of the test, the hypothesis is accepted or rejected. A hypothesis can be proven to be false (rejected) but a hypothesis can never be proven to be incorrect. The hypothesis is merely the best explanation available at the time. If the hypothesis is rejected, the scientist must begin again at step 3. 6. Repeating the test (making replications) – Results should never be based on only one series of test because unknown variables might have affected the experiment. If the test is repeated many times and the results are basically the same, the test is more reliable. Also, the

experiment should be able to be repeated by other scientists who would get the same results.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
