I have stayed ina house where a young household mulatto, daily and hourly, wasreviled, beaten, and persecuted enough to break the spirit of thelowest animal. The weather was fine, but the atmosphere remarkably hazy; I thoughtthe appearance foreboded a gale, but the Gauchos said it was owingto the plain, at some great distance in the interior, being onfire. They are extraordinarily tame and fearless, andhaunt the neighbourhood of houses for offal. This is one of the lagoon-islands (or atolls) of coralformation similar to those in the Low Archipelago which we passednear. It is said that the young condors cannot fly for anentire year; and long after they are able, they continue to roostby night, an hunt by day with their parents. CHAPTER XI. It was now thebeginning of winter, and I never saw a more cheerless prospect; thedusky woods, piebald with snow, could be only seen indistinctlythrough a drizzling hazy atmosphere. PLATE 35. CHAPTER XIV. Bahia. In the poolsof water I found but few aquatic beetles, and not any fresh-watershells: Succinea at first appears an exception; but here it must becalled a terrestrial shell, for it lives on the damp herbage farfrom water. JAGO--CAPE DE VERD ISLANDS. Recent Extinction. Infection generated by associated men in health. The old birdsgenerally live in pairs; but among the inland basaltic cliffs ofthe Santa Cruz I found a spot where scores must usually haunt. Mendoza. Unfavourable winds, however, delayed us, and on the 12th we ran into Pernambuco,--alarge city on the coast of Brazil, in latitude 8 degrees south. One of the menhad already found thirteen deer (Cervus campestris) lying dead, andI saw their FRESH hides; another of the party, a few minutes aftermy arrival, brought in seven more. The next day I employed myself in examining the very interesting, yet simple structure and origin of these islands. I was told that if I attempted to pass onfoot, my head would turn giddy, and that there was no room todismount; but I did not see a place where any one might not havewalked over backwards, or got off his mule on either side. The space, from under which volcanic matter on the 20th wasactually erupted, is 720 miles in one line, and 400 miles inanother line at right angles to the first: hence, in allprobability, a subterranean lake of lava is here stretched out, ofnearly double the area of the Black Sea. It is much softer, more transparent, and containsmore animal matter, than the natural incrustation at Ascension; butwe here again see the strong tendency which carbonate of lime andanimal matter evince
