He uses these phrases to make the people feel that they are unwanted and they need to fight for their rights. He makes it seem that they need to stand up, he give them a reason to stand up. He then continues on his speech to talk about human rights. He recognizes human rights by stating, “Human rights are something you were born with. Human rights are your God-given rights. Human rights are the rights that are recognized by all nations of this earth.” (Malcolm X 6).he makes the people feel cheated on things that were given at birth and he makes them come into realization that everywhere else they would be treated decently, but only in America at that time were they treated as slaves. He goes on in his speech to speak about how the audience’s future generations will look back and say that their parents did nothing for them. He makes the audience feel a sense of wrong and a sense of wanting to be good parents, he appeals to their inner feelings and tells them that their the people they work to have a good future will never look up to them because they never tried. As he goes on in his speech he really hits a heartstring on of the people listening by referring, “Not only did we give of our free labor, we gave of our blood” (Malcolm X 5). They gave their time and money to people who are trying to suppress them now. They had their hope for better lives for their children taken away but the country they came to make a new life from. By a country that took their cold blood and sweat to build upon. He made them the audience feel wronged in their lives. Malcolm X’s use of ethos helped in being able to reach out to his audience and relay the exact message he wanted to carry out. He achieves his purpose when talking to the people. Malcolm X’s main reason for giving this speech was to make sure that the people thought about who they were putting in office. Throughout the speech Malcolm X constantly uses words such as “Your vote” or, as in the title of the speech, “The Ballot or The bullet” he means to say that the people they put in office back then would determine how they lived.
