avoid prolonged war. Easy target- aircraft carrier, bring planes over for
bombing. Americans put all planes together to protect them, making them easier
to bomb.
*Dec 7, 1941*- Sunday morning, chill dudes with hangovers
Attack very short, 90 mins, come in from north to confuse radar along with
planes from Cali that day. No alarm, ships easily sunk.
The Arizona- battleship, dudes still alive underwater, can't be saved
Declaration of war? Bc of time zone differences, attack happens before
declaration, offends Americans, ends isolationist movement.

American general, Americans tried to arm the army in the Philippines,
Americans put planes in the air to find Japanese, they hit Americans while
refueling the plane, land in Philinnes
Bataan Death March
Americans running out of ammo, water, and resources. Douglas said help would
arrive, but none did. Roosevelt ordered them to go to Australia, everyone else
screwed, Americans surrender, Japanese shocked- not ready, no place to put
them
Death march- Americans marched to camps, wounded=dead, keep up pace or
die, mass graves, Americans bury their own guys
Doolittle Raid

Morale- fear Americans aren't believing, show population what could happen,
Americans small bomb Japan, ask Russians if Us can take off/land in Russia and
they say no. US aircraft carriers weren't in Pearl Harbor, so they were used.
Navy/army only have planes- not the same, smaller/lighter/shorter distance, use
broomstick as fake machine gun to save weight, land in China
Success rate- 80 pilots, 67 live, one lands in Soviet Union and the pilot/copilot
are arrested

Rations are insufficient, must grow own food, strongly encouraged by fed gov
to help out.

Increase wealth slowly and safely, pay to gov, gradually increase in value
through interest, cap on how much they can grow.

Boomtowns
Grow up overnight, never before existed, fast population growth, built up
around factories, little to no infrastructure, little housing, die after war ends and
become ghost towns.
War time rationing
Every month, coupons come in the mail, must have to coupon to be able to
purchase with cash. A limit per family, but extras could be sold on black
market- very hard to enforce limit.
Blue/gold stars
Number of stars= number of family members in military, turn gold with death
Japanese Internment
Expect invasion of west coast, can't determine how long it takes for allegiance
to switch, so fed gov takes no chances. Collect Japanese Americans on west
coast as a precaution, possessions lost, put in camps in the west away from the
coast. Not concentration camps!!!
Battle of Midway 1943
Japan- Big gap in ocean open to attack, want to take Midway. Plan to attack
Alaska to divert Americans.
Americans play a trick by saying it has a water shortage, then listen to the
Japanese reveal the code word
Battle- hold navy back behind horizon, left unseen, Japanese assume ships are in
Alaska. Americans take off after Japanese end attack, follow their planes back
directly to aircraft carriers
Bond and gasoline cause devastation, Japan's best pilots die, much worse than
losing planes
