2/3 of all people have problems with alcohol, drugs, and completed suicide are men. Men are 5x more violent, 2x more car accidents.
All mental illnesses run about the same for men and women. Women are more internal about their expression of mental illnesses; men are more external. Depressive equivalents for men include drugs/alcohol and keeping to themselves Role conflict and role overload have a negative effect on mental health Role conflict – two roles that are incompatible o Someone who is in the military, it is very strict and very organized/everyone knows their role. Meanwhile, once you get home, you may have to be the parental figure who is flexible, let’s things go sometimes, etc. So these two roles are conflicted. Role overload – example of this is being a mother while being a student; Lack of balance or reasonableness in the number or extent of expectations from a job- or position- holder. Role expectations – an example of this included stay at home dads. We do not expect men to stay at home and expect them to be working/providing for their families. Optimal mental health – women who work and have husbands who do equal share of both housework/child care and regular work Most egalitarian (equals) relationships are gay couples that are lesbians because they both were socialized in areas such as homecare, etc. They have both been equally exposed to the same socialization role expectations. They work equally together. Women get treatment more than men due to role expectation. Also outpatient. There are more men in inpatient treatment because they only go to the hospital under extreme circumstances. Female to male transgender in childhood is more accepted (tomboys) than male to female transgender (sissies) in our society. Race and Ethnicity Culture: meaning goals and values shared among a group that may be different from another group Ethnicity – people who share culture (meanings and values) but also distinguish themselves from other groups by shared decent Not enough groups included in the studies. It is very difficult to generalize with these ethnic groups are not properly represented in these studies. We have to separate race, ethnicity, and gender Approximately 13% of the population are immigrants. The largest minority group that we have today in the population is Hispanics. o The problem when we say Hispanics is that there are so many different types of groups that are listed under this huge category. o By 2060, Hispanics will make up 1/3 of the population. We can look at rates of mental illness through different ethnic groups, we can talk about how they express their feelings in areas of mental health, etc.
In physical health, African Americans have higher mortality and morbidity. However, these people have low rates of mental illness. Have better coping abilities. o Family support and religion play a huge role in AA and their copy strategies. o AA have higher rates of phobias over Caucasians. AA women have higher stress due to incarcerations of AA men.
