Siebel Business Process Framework: Workflow Guide Version 8.1, Rev A Overview of Siebel Workflow About Siebel Workflow 18 Overview of Objects That Are Used with a Workflow Process To plan for building a workflow process, it is important to understand the basic objects that can be defined. With Siebel Workflow, the run-time engine manages process flow, application flow, and integration flow. Basic objects such as a start step, decision point, Siebel operation step, and connectors are available to build your workflow process. Some of the basic objects for a workflow process are illustrated in Figure 1 . The basic objects of a workflow process include: 1 Workflow Events. A workflow process can be started from a run-time event in the Siebel application, a workflow policy, or through a script. An event can pass context from the caller, for example a user session, to a workflow process by using a row ID. For more information, see “Determining How the Workflow Process Is Started” on page 105 . 2 Workflow Rules. A workflow decision rule is a rule that guides the flow of control within the workflow process. It can be based on business component data or on a local variable in the workflow process that is known as a process property. A rule expression is defined using Siebel Query Language. For more information, see “Determining Decision Logic of a Workflow Process” on page 107 . 3 Workflow Actions. A workflow action is an action in a workflow process that performs some form of data manipulation, where data is used as input, a transformation occurs or data is examined, then data is produced as output. A workflow action can perform an operation on a database record or call a business service. For more information, see “Determining Actions of a Workflow Process” on page 109 . Figure 1. Overview of Siebel Workflow About Siebel Workflow Siebel Business Process Framework: Workflow Guide Version 8.1, Rev A 19 Scenario to Promote Timely Resolution of a Service Request This topic gives one example of how a workflow process can be used to resolve a service request in a timely fashion. You might use workflow processes differently, depending on your business model. This scenario demonstrates how basic concepts for a workflow process can be used to automate a business process. Prior to implementing Siebel Call Center, a service manager for a high volume service agency felt her organization was unable to resolve many customer issues in a timely manner.
