gradient, active transport may be necessary. 3. In regard to plant cells, tonicity has many different effects. For starters, any type of cell placed in an isotonic environment will be unaffected as there is no net movement of water across the plasma membrane. However, transferring the plant cell into a hypertonic solution will cause the cell to lose water (usually caused by an increase in salinity). Some plant cells can be classified as turgid, meaning they are in their healthiest state. They are kept this way by surrounding hypotonic solutions. This all occurs due to turgor pressure. This is defined as the amount of pressure applied on a plant cell and opposes any further water uptake. A plant cell can become flaccid. This is described when the cell and its surroundings are isotonic and there is no net tendency for water to enter; therefore, they

become limp, or flaccid. On the contrary, plant cells also have the ability to “die”. Moreover, when a cell loses the water in its surroundings, the cell shrinks and shrivels up. This phenomenon is known as plasmolysis. In contrast, a hypotonic environment will fill a cell with water causing it to swell and potentially burst. Nevertheless, a plant cell contains a tough cell wall which prevents the cell from bursting by pushing back on the swollen organelles.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
