in the enemy's rear”. 7 Therefore, the synchronized and comprehensive plan for the series of attacks is the key to the success on the attritional warfare. The logistic was another important issue. Due to the learning and adaptation of the Entente, during the Entente offensive, the pace of logistic could catch up with the speed of advance of the ground forces. This contributed the fast speed of advance of the Entente for 100 miles in hundred days. The combine-arms warfare contributing to the achievement. The importance of combine – arms warfare was the most vital factor in tactical level that the Entente experienced and adapted from the previous failures. The achievement of combine-arms tactic depended upon a well organized and synchronized plan to make the advance and movement possible due to the diversity of forces involved such as infantry, artillery, mechanized and aircraft. This argument is in alignment with Barr that ‘the truth was that the German army had been forced into retreat by "squadrons of tanks" and "thick lines of infantry," backed up by tremendous weights of artillery.’ 8 Hence, the adaptation to combine-arms warfare by BEF led to the first time advancement of forces in miles after the stalemate in 1914. One of the most important tactical elements of combined-armed warfare in the Entente offensive was the tanks. The tanks were used to protect the movement of the ground forces for trench 7 N.J.A. crossing. In the Somme, the assignment to cut the German’s wires to open the path for infantry to attack the defense was the duty of artillery but they could not achieve it. 9 By the learning from the Somme, BEF used tank to crush the wires and protect the infantry. As the result, BEF could breakthrough this formidable defensive line within days. Regarding the command and control, the Allied unified command in strategic level was not the only one factor to the success of the Entente offensive, but also the decentralized command concept was another. The section-level commanders were encouraged and authorized to make decision. Hence, the allocation of command to the low level of infantry allowed the troops in the fronts more flexible to adapt to the changing security environment. Moreover, BEF adopted the concept of the advanced guards to follow up the German. 10 Therefore, with this concept, the speed of advance of the Entente was beyond expectation. In combine-arms warfare, the artillery was used to neutralize the defense force. The key to tactical success of artillery was the accuracy not the density. With the improved accuracy and bombardment technique of indirect fire, BEF could learn from the failure of the Somme and adapt
