and all of the Mormons left the state of Michigan. Describe the Culture of Michigan as described in this section of class. During this time, there were still Indians in Michigan that lived in clans and the religion existed with their specific songs and dances and their own spiritual rituals and the use or herbal medicines. During this time is when politics began to have bigger impact on Michigan, during this time was the development of the Republican Party, taking the name Republicans because they said they were “battling for personal freedom”. We had the Civil War during this time and families were split and roles changed. The men went off or war and the women had to take care of the family and the homestead. Because of the shortage of men to work the fields, many new manufacturing tools were developed and used. Many were protesting black suffrage and women suffrage during this era. A promotion for immigration was also happening during this era and many of the immigrants that started to settle in Michigan and brought the cultures from their originating homeland. The Germans greatly improved the education in Michigan during this time. The Germans also helped in advancing mining and lumbering in Michigan. The Canadians that immigrated to Michigan, especially the French Canadians, wanted to preserve their culture so they established national societies, newspapers, and parishes run by Canadian priests.
