It took a long time to decipher and it was a big progress. -about the maya script and taking these blocks of characters and understanding the political system took a lot of time. -writing in cave walls and paintings and stone uprights called STEELIES (?) -its not about inscribing something but making something very public. Ex. dinner plate where you have some maya writing

-scribes also have authority because they can read and write and not everyone can read and write. -we take it for granted but writing has a power effect. -scribes were not only celebrated as important political but also in warfare as well. because they can tell a story to others and write it down were a target. -the captives are scribes have their hands cut off so that they can no longer write. -Maya calendar continued to structure life from one political regime to the next.
