so thoroughly that no trace of their existence of the people themselves or their cultural or their history remains -After World War One lots of states got together to form a “country club” of states so that they would no longer have to fight over territory and other things and called it the Leagueof Nations.-This first attempt didn’t really work because there were a lot of powerful states that didn’twant to relinquish any of their sovereign power by having to play to an international set of rules which would supersede their own sovereign powers, as well as unresolved territory issues that were not resolved in world war one. The League of Nations failed, and World War II happened. -After the dangers of weaponry in World War II everyone started to get serious about doing an “international institution thing”. -This led to the United Nations being formed in 1945, since they have become the premierinternational institution of our time as a place where the sovereign states can get together to absolve disagreements before they become active war. -The United Nations is all the sovereign states in the world except Vatican City, all of these countries created the rules by which everyone recognizes each other’s sovereignty over their peoples in their defined territories-This led to there being no more reason to fight each other anymore unless someone violates the sovereignty of someone else, but when this happens the whole world is watching and will know it happened and there will be punishment for breaking the rules that were established and agreed to-1991 Iraq invades Kuwait, the US and the World went after Saddam Hussain for it
-In establishing these international norms and standards and rules of the UN, the world hasalso perhaps unwittingly sowed the seeds for the undoing of the classic concept of sovereignty itself -The UN established a whole bunch of world rules on the conduct of states and the conduct of leaders of states when it comes to what they do to the peoples -Protection of human rights and humanitarian law which is for everyone in the world all the humans and where the UN has agreed, yes. Everyone has this base level of human rights and dignities that should be protected and we the UN might have to get involved toprotect them. Specifically,oWar crimes oCrimes against humanityoCrimes of aggression oGenocide -Everyone, including the United States, agreed to these things back in the formation of theUnited Nations back in 1945 -This was added because the 20thcentury was the bloodiest, nastiest, crappiest, century of human existence to date. oThe Holocaust in Europeconducted by the Nazis where genocide did occur and perhaps five to six million Jewish people were rounded up and killed. That’s genocide. Pictures were televised to the world.
