Bantay Bata 163 is a child welfareprogram that protects disadvantaged and at-risk children.In 1997, Bantay Bata was awarded the United NationsGrand Awardee for Excellence besting 187 countries fromall over the world. For education, she produced aneducational television show on science, math, values,
history, and English for elementary students. The successof Sineskwela was recognized by honoring Ms. Lopez withthe UNESCO Kalinga Awardthe first Southeast Asian toearn such a distinction. Ms. Lopez is also at the forefrontof environmental protection and conservation. In her fightto protect the environment, she launched a 10 millionsignature campaign to say in one loud voice that keybiodiversity areas must be protected and not be ravaged bymining. Since then, Bantay Kalikasan’sthrust has beenenvironmental education through the promotion ofecotourism. Her goal is to be able to imprint in the heartsand minds of Filipinos the mandate of taking care of theenvironment which in turn will lead to sustainable andinclusive growth. The foundation is currently present in 13provinces, 33 municipalities, and has helped over 140people’s organizations across the country.Rodne Galicha - Galicha was born in the town of SanFernando on Sibuyan Island on June 2, 1979. He studiedto be a priest as well as an environmental activist, and thecombination of spiritual and scientific thinking is ahallmark of his vision.“I just want to sit down on a rock,look at the horizon, close my eyes while feeling mybreathing in and outbest to enjoy the orchestra of thegentle waves weaved in to the noise of chirping birds of theSibuyan Sea. From the seashore, {I take} a little walk tothe mountain side and give respect to the majesty of Mt.Guiting-Guiting….” Galichaknows, however, that positiveaction is needed to bring about a sustainableworld. He wasa Philippine leader of Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project andrepresented his country at UN climate meetings in Moroccoand Germany. He worked with the Filipino Youth BeyondParis and Campus Corps, understanding that thesustainability message must be routed through
children. He recounted his best speaking opportunity as achance visit to a small village school.“Since there was noelectricity, I managed to use chalk and illustrated thebasics of the climate crisis on the blackboardthegreenhouse effect and the carbon cycle, among others. Thechildren were so receptive and they committed themselvesto make a change in their own homes and schools.”He is afounder and leader of the new organization (founded in2018) Living Laudato Si’ Philippines, an interfaithmovement arising from Pope Francis’ encyclical aboutsustainability and the climate crisis.
