Lincoln wins. v. Problem is that South doesn’t know what Lincoln believes . vi. On the record, L says he doesn’t want to abolish slavery, just doesn’t want to extend it. vii. Never said it so that the southerners could hear it. viii. South assumed he wanted to abolish it. ix. S. Carolina immediately succeeds . x. They see the anti slavery party as in charge and they do not want that. It’s incompatible to their lifestyle.
V.The Road to War a. Lower south secedes b. Lincoln’s inauguration c. Fort Sumter—south forced to fire first—starts civil war i. When the southern states secede, they create new governments in Montgomery Alabama. Form the Confederate states of America. Set up a government. that looks a lot like the old one. ii. Any territory that was the federal government. is now confederate property. iii. Including military outposts and forts. Etc. iv. L doesn’t believe it’s legal to leave the union and wants to reestablish federal control v. 2 forts in the south are still in federal hands. vi. Sumter is one of them vii. L gets word that the general in charge there is out of weapons. viii. So he either has to leave the fort, leaving the fort in the hands of the south. ix. Or he gets re-stocked. x. If it gets restocked, the confederates may stop him, causing a war xi. If he lets it go, the feds aren’t as powerful.
xii. L. Decides to resupply fort Sumter xiii. Brilliant of Lincoln xiv. Forces the southern states to stop the resupply. xv. Means the South has to fire the first shot. xvi. Debate is now in the Confederate side. xvii. They see it as a new country. xviii. Jeff. Davis is the president of the Confederacy and he decides that they cannot allow the resupply. xix. On April 11, we get a command from confed. forces to the major at Sumter to surrender. xx. Major says no, and at 4:30 am, the confederate forces shell Sumter. xxi. In Charleston S. Carolina xxii. This is the beginning of the war xxiii. 33 hours later, fort Sumter surrenders. The important thing is that they started the war. xxiv.
