Taylor, her mother, Lou Ann, and Sandi are all the characters that have children, and all of them are raising their child on their own. This characterization of the women appeals to readers because it shows that they are strong, capable women. Kingsolver idealizes the single mother, thereby characterizing the father as irresponsible and astray. In a way, Kingsolver is stating her opinion and displaying women as the more important figure.
The time period set in The Bean Treesis 1986-1987. During this same year, the Immigration Reform and Control Act was passed to reform the status of unauthorized immigrants. Esperanza and Estevan were both illegal immigrants who fled from Guatemala because of the government. The first clue the reader gets about something going on is on page 107. While talking to Taylor, Mattie says “Just don’t tell me you’re running from the law,’ she said finally. ‘I’ve got enough of that on my hands”. Taylor does not know what this means duringthis time, but as the story goes on, she figures out what Mattie meant. In The Bean Trees, they stay at Mattie’s tire shop as a safe house, but by the end of the novel they must move on with the help of Mattie, Turtle, and Taylor to a safe church where they can stay.
