transceiver for nearby signals. Finally, the device hosts 4 AA batteries. In use, you press the wake button on the Apple Newton and it quickly turns it on, displaying all the applications. The touch interface is standard styles use, you can move around windows and of course, in addition to using the on-screen keyboard, you can manually write out words. The handwriting recognition was always flawed, more on that later. The device was capable of learning your handwriting style to a limited degree, however, and had features to quickly and easily correct any letters that it got wrong. As far as what it offers to the busy business person, it had a number of applications installed. It had a calendar where you could browse by the year, month, day, and the hours in the day to manage your schedule. The Newton also came pre-installed with a basic calculator and an address book. Although it was a bit clunky and overly complicated, users could hook up their Newton to their computer and download custom applications. One such application involved a Web Browser. Another was called Newton Works, which had basic office productivity applications. It also had various other fun applications, if the business person was so inclined, such as simple games and drawing. Finally, I would personally comment, given the lack of

anything like it at the time, that the Newton offered a uniquely valuable ability to take notes and organize them quickly and efficiently for the time, although that value is far succeeded by modern technology. Marketing Promotions: The product was actually highly anticipated after it had a successful showing in Chicago, and it initially observed good sales until a PR disaster emerged that would always haunt the Newton. The handwriting recognition software, one of it’s highly anticipated features, was incredibly buggy, which in turn made the device too difficult to use effectively, especially during its initial phases. The handwriting was so notoriously disliked, so they reached out to a small company in Russia, called ParaGraph, who specialized in handwriting recognition. They managed to come to an agreement to use ParaGraph’s software on the Newton, which in later years of the product’s lifecycle would help see an improvement in the Newton’s recognition capabilities. In the end, the handwriting recognition went from completely unusable to tolerably bad, but the Newton would always be haunted by this reputation. Some people would never even
