This line of thought had significant ramifications during the Civil War. The idea of American nationhood was deeply rooted in many parts of North America such that Union soldiers were prepared to lay their lives for the sake of this principle. Many former presidents have expressed their reverence and admiration of Hamilton as one of the most impressive and outstanding founding fathers. Gutzman makes a strong case in favor of Jefferson in his book. According to him, Jefferson's influence on the American experience is more significant than the influence of other political figures. He is of the opinion that Jefferson spread the republican spirit to America and that this spirit lives on up to date.

6 Jefferson is recognized for the disentanglement of religion and government and the consensus during the revolution that government would be republican and a majority of its officeholders would be elected. Some of the republican principles championed by Jefferson include democratizing landholding, local control of education, and decentralization of government. Gutzman claims that the Louisiana Purchase that was facilitated by Jefferson is one of the reasons America turned into a trans-continental country allowing her to rise and become a diplomatic, economic, and super military power. Jefferson also drafted some of the principles in the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. This Statute was emulated by other states and featured in the U.S. Constitution during James Madison’s tenure. Jefferson was against a policy in England where a person would not attend Oxford or Cambridge or have a seat in Parliament if they were not Episcopalian ( Riaz & Muqarrab 244). According to Jefferson, the government may only pervert religion, but it should not be involved. Although Jefferson was a part of Virginia’s landed aristocracy, he was a champion of the dismantlement of the system of primogeniture. This system prevented owners of land from dividing their land to future generations. Following this change, in place of aristocratic land distribution, there was a free distribution from one family to another and land was profoundly divided. Though he was not in the White House at the time, Jefferson is recognized for the founding of the ‘University of Virginia.' Jefferson influenced the establishment of every university in the United States. Before the University of Virginia was founded, a majority of the university curriculums were aristocratic ( McAllister 281). The centerpiece of these curriculums was Latin and Greek. Students attended class to recite what they were able to memorize. However, Jefferson believed that students should have the freedom to study what

7 they regarded useful to them. As opposed to reciting what they had memorized, students were to demonstrate their knowledge through essay exams which were first introduced when the University of Virginia was opened in 1825.
