As long as you are confident and keep yourself updated on what is happening around you, you will do great.” (Rodrigues, C, T, Personal Communication June 22, 2019.)Pharmacy settingsThere are varying settings for a pharmacy technician to work in. Community Pharmacy otherwise known as “retail Pharmacy” are companies such as CVS or Walgreens. Working as a Pharmacy Technician in this field of work varies from Clinical Pharmacy even though they have some similarities, in Retail Pharmacy a technician will be filling scripts, refill requests, verifying and inputting insurance information and interacting with patients on a daily basis. Of course, that’s not all pharmacy technicians are responsible for in a retail pharmacy. They also help maintain inventory, order new stock, and count pills and compound medications under the supervision of a pharmacist. Clinical Pharmacy is working in areas like a Hospital or ASL. As atechnician working in Clinical Pharmacy the main differences are that you are preparing prescriptions for 1-2 days at a time versus a long period of time. The second big difference is in a hospital the Pharmacy Technician will be interacting more with the nurses and doctors than the patient. Pharmacy technicians working in a hospital will also prepare different types of medication than those working in retail. In a hospital setting, technicians may be asked to prepare IVs or other medications not often dealt with in a retail setting. No matter which setting a Pharmacy Technician works in the overall job is the same, and following the rules and regulations is important. The patient’s safety relies on our knowledge and hard work to help them get and stay healthy and we need to make sure that every person who is in our care has a good experience and understanding of the medication he/she is receiving and how to use it properly.
