it wants to do with laterals. We bring them in, but don’t necessarily integrate them well with teams of attorneys/ partners. Laterals and new hires find themselves asking partners for work, as opposed to being part of a common group working together.” OUR SURVEY SAYS Vault’s Verdict: Baker & Hostetler is a friendly firm and a good place to build a long-term career, especially since associates say that making partner here is actually a realistic goal. Many associates would appreciate more in the way of formal training—and market compensation. New York associates in particular are concerned about the firm’s plans once the massive Madoff engagement ends. Satisfaction • “Baker is a collegial environment with great clients and provides you with great litigation experience, which is exactly why I lateraled over. My only downfall with satisfaction is that the firm lacks some resources that a firm of this caliber and size should have.” • “I enjoy the work and feel I am fairly compensated. Our firm’s culture and work-life balance really separates it apart from other firms of comparable size.” • “Great people and interesting work. Relatively flexible schedule and supportive of family obligations and vacations. Very supportive of networking opportunities. New initiatives to provide further training to associates are excellent.
