2. What criteria must be met when using any heated humidification device with patients receiving mechanical ventilation? Why? Mechanical ventilation suppresses the mechanisms that heat and moisturize inhaled air. Therefore, humidification is mandatory during mechanical ventilation. HME devices are recommended for short term use and during patient transport due to the portability. Heated humidifiers should be used on patients who exhibit any of the HME contraindications and also for long term mechanical ventilation use. 3. When is the use of heated humidifiers preferred over the use of heat and moisture exchangers (HME)? A heated humidifier (HH) is preferred over a heat and moisture exchanger (HME) in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), during non-invasive ventilation (NIV), during weaning from mechanical ventilation, in very low birth weight infants and in those with contraindications for HME (McNeily 2015). As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
