On occasions, particularly in the first couple of weeks, you may find that the required OS image ICT310 is missing in Step 2 above. This happens if no ICT310 student has used the machine before, hence the OS image has not yet been copied from the image server to the first SSD drive of your machine. In this case you need to follow the instructions below to copy the OS image to the your lab machine. 1. Power on the machine and then press F12 key until the one-time boot menu appears. 2. Select "Onboard NIC" and press Enter key. 3. When PXE Network Boot Menu appears, select "Recovery/Update Environment" and press Enter key. 4. When recovery environment has booted, enter option 1 (Replace entire miniboot environment) and press Enter key. 5. The computer will restart automatically upon completion of updating the OS images. Then just follow the first set of instructions to deploy and boot the OS. Unix Exercises The following exercises are designed to get familiar with Unix (Linux) systems. More information about these basic Unix commands is available from the Rute: Chapter 4 (see Required Reading). 1. Log in to your Linux account. 2. Play with the Linux desktop environment for while. 3. Start up a terminal. Try the command ls -l to see what is under your home directory.

4. Use manual page command to check various options available to the ls command: man ls . 5. Learn to use command cd to move around in the directory hierarchy. For example, type cd /bin and then ls -l to see a list of commonly used commands. To return to your home directory, type cd . 6. Use command pwd to find out your current directory. Experimenting with the commands cd , pwd and ls .
