ties by a mean of entertainment, and socioeconomic competitiveness between families would serve as a persuasive factor, like keeping up with the Jones’. This ad pledges the value of helping your children behave better and get better grades in school, in addition to providing entertainment for the family. AD 4 Ford Motor Co. 1. What images and text do you see in the ad? What is the draw in the ad to the product or something else? The images in this ad are colorful and of the Ford station wagon, Ford convertible, and the four door Ford sedan. You also see families, men and a couple picnicking. The text you see in the ad is Look what you are missing if you don’t own a Ford! The draw to the ad was for the product of a Ford car and what you could miss out on if you didn’t own a Ford as imaged in the photographs. 2. What is the ad for? Is this clear in the ad? The ad is for Ford cars. The ad is clear in the fact that they are showing the consumer what they could do with each of the different body styles of Ford cars offered. Yes, this ad is very clear with the target and value of the product. They used the pleasure appeal with this ad. The text says, “Look what you are missing if you don’t own a Ford.” 3. Who do you think the intended audience was for the product? Are there any groups who may feel excluded from this ad? The intended audience was those with a driver’s license and the man. As the man was the primary decision maker in the 1950’s. Those that may be excluded from the ad are those that do not drive or not old enough to own a vehicle.
4. Why do you think someone in the 1950s would buy this product? Would you buy the product today based on this ad? Why/not? I think someone in the 1950’s would purchase this product because it was new and they needed transportation, they also wanted luxury and something they could have pride in. I would buy this product based off the ad today because they have a variety of styles to fit any need, and their claim that ford vehicles “will not break down on you or need fixes.” Be it family transportation with the station wagon, the convertible for the style or the functional four door sedan. Ford offers a wide range of options to the consumer. 5. Do you think this product would be purchased because it was needed or because of any ideal/value/or culture represented in the ad? Be specific in supporting your answer. I think this product would have been purchased out of need in the 1950’s. People needed transportation in order to get back and forth to work, grocery stores, and church. People purchase cars for prestige even today, just as they did in 1950. And Ford’s reputation of quality/value is a qualifying factor of purchase. We all need reliable transportation to get us to and from our destinations.
