For magnesium the students ran the experiment with 6 mL of water as their initial volume but the amount of chips was too much that the solid went over the water level. So the students decided to begin with a larger initial volume of 6.65 mL. 5.09g of magnesium chips were put in the small beaker, of which the “gross weight” was then measured. The magnesium chips where then placed in the graduated cylinder and the final volume was recorded. Magnesium chips were disposed of in the appropriate containers. The students started off with an initial volume of 6 mL in the graduated cylinder again. The “gross weight” was taken for the tare mass of the small beaker and 6.41g lead pieces. After recording the “gross weight” the lead pieces were transferred to the graduated cylinder and the water level was recorded as the final volume. The lea pieces were then properly disposed of. The students then chose to measure the density of glass bead. Once again they started of with an initial volume of 6 mL in the graduated cylinder. The students recorded the gross mass of the beaker containing 5.52g of glass beads. The glass beads were then transferred into the graduated cylinder and the water level was recorded as the final volume. The final metal used was aluminum granular. The students used an intial volume of 6.01 mL of water in the graduated cylinder. The gross mass of the beaker containing 6.36g of aluminum granular was recorded. The aluminum granular was then transferred into the graduated cylinder.
