grade (Urbaeva, Booth, & Wei, 2017). They found that positive family socialization and education may influence the adolescent alcohol use (Urbaeva et al., 2017). Knowing all these cultural norms within the Native American population will be a guide on how to develop a plan of care for them. References Urbaeva, Z., Booth, J. M., & Wei, K. (2017). Case 1: JC, an at-risk 86-year-old Asian male is physically and financially dependent on his daughter, a single mother who has little time or money for her father's health needs. He has a hx of hypertension ( HTN ), gastroesophageal reflux disease ( GERD ), b12 deficiency, and chronic prostatitis. He currently takes Lisinopril 10mg QD, Prilosec 20mg QD, B12 injections monthly, and Cipro 100mg QD. He comes to you for an annual exam and states “I came for my annual physical exam, but do not want to be a burden to my daughter." As an advanced practice nurse, learning how to communicate effectively to different cultures without any touch of stereotyping or discriminating is an important task to provide patient care. Every culture is different and is unique in their little way. It is our responsibility to be self-aware, reflect practice, and recognize one’s own culture, values, and biases, to achieve cultural competence towards an individual patient (Ball, Dains , Flynn, Solomon, & Stewart, 2015). According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), the use of cultural competency in a focused or strategic way can lead to quality improvement process and result in a better patient care. The case that I chose involves an elderly Asian who is physically and financially dependent on his daughter. Some of the challenges that are commonly encountered with Asian patients include language barrier, low socioeconomic status, traditional health practices and beliefs, and epidemiologic issues (Jin, Blixen , & Slomka , 2014). Language difficulties can result in an inaccurate initial diagnosis and suboptimal treatment and therefore having an interpreter to facilitate a better conversation can help acquire all the information needed during the initial visit (Jin et al., 2014). Also, by being comfortable to speak in his language, misinterpretations or misleading questions can be prevented instead a more in-depth conversation including the

sensitive issues can be asked appropriately. The communication between the patient and the health care practitioner is the most fundamental part of medical practice (Jin et al., 2014).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
