Earlier covenants which included The Bible, the Magna Carta, which was a charter of rights, and English common-law, also were examples of valued commitment and self-definition. People in government had been created, so documents had to change. Descriptions of institutions and self- definitions became more valued when starting to list these values, these ended up turning
into long preambles and a much longer Bill of Rights. (Lutz p.67) This is how the covenant came to be called the Constitution. Brittan taught America the core tradition of constitutionalism. The Ancient Romans taught us “constitutio” and Greeks “politeia”, were plans for a way of life. America was a unique blend of influences and their innovations. One of the major difficulties that the founders dealt with, was trying to work through the differences between the large and small states. (McClellan p.189) They accomplished this by giving a large share of power to the larger states, while making sure all of the states had representation within the government. They were thoughtful in their deliberations when it came to resolving differences.
