During lunch Nick meets Meyer Wolfsheim, a shady man, who claims to be responsible for fixing 1919 World Series and has underground business connections. Nick thinks that’s where Gatsby’s money comes from. Nick spots Jordan who tell him that during the meeting she had with Gatsby, Gatsby confesses that he is in love with Daisy. Daisy met Gatsby during the war, fell in love with him, but left Gatsby for Tom while he was at war. Gatsby now wants her back and asks Nick to help by throwing a tea party. Relevant quote:”’He wants to know-‘ continued Jordan ‘-if you’ll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over’”(Fitzgerald, 76). This quote shows how scared Gatsby is of Daisy rejecting him, so he feels the need to force Nick into getting them into the same room to allow Gatsby to work his magic on her. Chapter 5: ● Nick and Jordan went on a date ● Nick sees, on his way home, Gatsby house is well lit but silent ● Gatsby talks to Nick from his lawn ● Gatsby seems to want to make Nick happy ● Gatsby invites Nick to Coney Island and to swim in his pool ● Gatsby just wants Nick to say yes to the tea party plan ● Nick says yes to Gatsby’s plan ● As a thank you Gatsby offers to have people come over and cut his grass and asked Nick to join his side business, that does not involve the Meyer ● Nick gets offended and declines the offer but still agrees to the tea party plan ● It is raining during the tea party and Gatsby is very nervous ● Gatsby sent people to cut Nick’s grass and arrange flowers ● Gatsby is nervous that Daisy won’t love home the same ● Nick brings Daisy inside when she gets there only to find Gatsby had left through
Goodwill 6 the back exit to re-enter through the front ● The reunion was very awkward ● Gatsby knocks over clock then tell Nick that the meeting was a mistake ● Nick leaves the house for a couple hours to return to a happy room ● The rain stopped and Gatsby invites them to his house ● Daisy gets overwhelmed and starts crying ● Gatsby tells how he embraced the green light of her dock ● Nick doesn’t think that Daisy can live up to Gatsby’s expectation ● Gatsby idolizes Daisy ● Gatsby calls in Klipspringer to play the piano ● The forgotten Nick gets up and leaves Important events: 1. Nick gets offended and rejects Gatsby’s offered to clean up his yard. 2. The tea party happens and Daisy and Gatsby fall back in love with each other. Explanation of chapter: On Nicks way home from a date with Jordan he sees Gatsby and they spark up a conversation. Gatsby wants to make Nick happy so he offers to take him places, go swimming, and have people cut Nicks yard, but Nick replies with a hard no. On the rainy day of the tea party, Gatsby has people come over to Nick’s house to make the yard look nice. Nick goes outside to walk Daisy in to find that Gatsby has left the house so his re-entry would be realistic. The beginning of the party is really awkward, Gatsby even admits that this was a mistake.
