Heroin users also have a high risk of obtaining HIV because when they inject heroin with one or more partners, they tend to use the same needle for all of them. If HIV positive blood gets onto the needle and an HIV negative human injects themselves with that needle, the virus is transmitted. Blood transfusion is also a way to contract the HIV virus. Although the risk is very high, an HIV test may show the wrong results if the blood is HIV positive, and the blood will be transfused. However, the risk of that is 1/1,000,000. Lastly, an HIV positive woman who is pregnant can also transmit the virus to the baby. If not, then breastfeeding presents a risk of transmitting the virus, as well. Stages of HIV 1.) Asymptomatic – the 1 st stage of HIV, where a person is HIV positive, but shows no symptoms. 2.) Symptomatic – Symptoms occur as a result of a severe drop in T cells.
