Procedure: 1. Fill a dry styrofoam “coffee cup” calorimeter (inner cup) with 100mL of distilled water at standard room temperature.

2. Fill a dry beaker (outer cup) with 100mL of distilled water at standard room temperature. 3. Theoretically calculate the required mass of NH4Cl to transfer enough thermal energy for the desired outcome (listed above). 4. Prepare the stopwatch setting on the Labquest 2 system. 5. Place a thermometer in the inner cup and record the initial temperature of system. 6. Add 20 grams of NH4Cl to the 100mL of water in the beaker (outer) and immediately start the timer. 7. Stop the time once the system temperature is decreased by 5 C. Record time and mass of NH4Cl in the Labquest 2 system. 8. Repeat steps 4-8 for 5 separate trials with different masses of NH4Cl in increments of 2 grams (with 20 grams as the median value). Safety: Ammonium nitrate is flammable and/or explosive when in contact with combustible material. Please be advised not to allow the salt to become contaminated with organic matter. Therefore students will not use Ammonium nitrate.
