Norma Borlaug estimates that we would need another 5 billion cows to produce enough manure for our farms. People continue to criticize that farmers are losing touch with their land and livestock by becoming more industrial. But, they do not understand that industrial farming is the only way to produce enough food for this nation. Also, if farmers were not closely connected to their farms, they would have stopped farming long ago. Farmers do whatever is necessary to both survive and produce enough for consumers.
Q & A 1. Make a case for ‘big’ agriculture/Production Agriculture. In other words, support ‘big’ agriculture even if you personally have a problem with it. The point of this exercise is to make you see the opposing view. a. In one paragraph, support ‘big’ agriculture with all the logical reasons you can come up with. These reasons may or may not have anything to do with ethics. Everyone believes that protecting the environment and ensuring human health is the most important factors when it comes to agriculture. But, they do not realize that many Americans would be hungry if farmers only produced healthy organic food. Fewer amounts of food would be produced each year. Prices for these foods would sky rocket. Many consumers would not be able to afford to buy groceries. For these reasons, production agriculture exists. Production agriculture allows for farms to produce massive amounts of food at a “safe” level for humans to ingest, while providing the lowest cost for consumers allowing all families to put food on the table.
