Place crank handle in its forward latched position. 2.Select Penetrator and insert into plunger rod. 3.Place proper anvil into elevating screw. 4.Select proper major load by means of the weight selector dial. 5.Place specimen or Rockwell test block on the anvil. 6.Raise specimen into contact with the penetrator by turning the capstan handwheel clockwise. 7.Continue until small pointer is near the black zone. 8.Continue until the long pointer is in a vertical position. The minor load is now fully applied. 9.Turn zero adjuster control of the dial gage until the set line is aligned behind the long pointer. 10.Push down on load release bar to apply the major load. 11.When the long pointer comes to rest, within 2-3 seconds, return the crank handle to its forward position. This removes the major load. The minor load is still applied. 12.Read the Rockwell number from the dial gage. 13.Remove the minor load by turning the capstan handwheel counter-clockwise, lowering the elevating screw and specimen so that they clear the penetrator. 14.Remove the specimen or move to another area for additional testing.

6 Figure 2.5 Round Bar Carbon steel Specimen 4.Experiment Requirements Here this lab experiment requires us: 1.To get familiar with the hardness testers and learn how to operate the machines. 2.Test each specimen using the Rockwell tester on the B scale (100 kg and 1/16 in. diameter indenter in place). 3.Perform sufficient number of tests, making sure that each successive test is at least three diameters of the indenter from any previous test.
