Additionally, I want to teach psychology as a college professor preferably in ABA. After completing by master’s and working in the field as a BCBA for 5 years, I want to pursue my doctorate’s degree. This will strengthen my resume to teach and hopefully land me in a larger school. I would love to work in the ABA field by starting my own company while building ABA through educating future therapists. I really enjoy this career path because I see it as the most realistic when it comes to job satisfaction, income, and quality time with my family.

MY JOURNEY TO BECOMING A BCBA 4 My short-term goal is to become a BCBA so I can move into a supervisory position and start learning the ins and outs of the business. The additional income will also support my family’s decision to move up north. This is where my husband and I envision us raising our children. As a BT and RBT, I feel like I am following orders and executing the basic understanding of ABA. As I progress through my career and school, I will increase my overall knowledge of the skill and the profession. Additionally, I believe that having knowledge in psychology makes us think more critically during assessments, interventions, behavioral implementation strategies/planning and parent-teaching. Therefore, as I progress to the practitioner-scholar, I have a higher probability of influencing people in achieving a better quality of life. I want to be a BCBA to achieve career satisfaction and be able to provide my family with a better quality of life. I want the ability to succeed at my job and have the time to spend with my family. My ultimate goal in life is to become a doctor in ABA and to teach at the university level. Like my step-father used to say, “Education is something that is so valuable and no one can take it away from you.” Vision and Goals My vision and goals in my career in psychology is to obtain a doctorate’s in ABA. My first milestone would be to complete my master’s in psychology by December of 2019. After my master’s, I will become a BCBA. This will require both experience and scholarly knowledge. I will work as a BCBA in a supervisory position with my current job for two years to acquire experience in my role and to strengthen my resume. Finally, I will enroll into my doctorate’s program by May of 2020. Accomplishing my doctorate’s is my ultimate goal in life. I am confident that I will obtain my degree within four to five years of becoming a BCBA. When the

MY JOURNEY TO BECOMING A BCBA 5 practitioner-scholar model described the attributes of a scholar-practitioner, it solidified my desire and confidence in my decision of a profession in ABA (McClintok, 2004). Once I start my practicum at Capella, it will teach me how to develop empirical based knowledge and scientific research during my assessments by evaluating data during my coursework as a BCBA by applying evidence-based interventions. I learned that the practitioner- scholar, within the field of psychology, is someone who is improving their abilities in research and continues to build experience in the field. The practitioner-scholar looks to improve current research by creating new questions and solutions (Capella University, 2003). Having theoretical

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
