Surgical Department (Safety Domain: MRSA prevention post-op)The role and responsibilities of the surgical department include providing aseptic technique while the patient is in the operating room to ensure prevention infection. The surgical department is important for implementing VBP in the organization because most surgical infections occur post-op which can affect HCAHPS scores and reimbursement. Surgical site infections lead to increasedmorbidity and mortality in the surgical population and contribute to an already rising healthcare cost (Swenson, Hedrick, Metzger, Bonatti, Pruett, & Sawyer, 2009). The use of prophylactic antibiotics and chlorhexidine cleaner prior to surgery has been proven to decrease post-op infections which will increase reimbursements and provide better outcomes for patients.
