Business & Industry Describe stores and shops available in the community, e.g., grocery stores, gas stations, department stores. What type of business climate exists? Manufactures? Light or heavy industry? Large employers? Small business owners? Retail? Hospitality industry? Do people have to seek employment elsewhere? Is this considered a “bedroom community”- where people work outside this community but live here ? Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. In this area there is every type of store you cam think of. The stores and shops that are available in the community are grocery stores, gas stations and chain stores. There are plenty of retail shops, both large and small employers. This area is also a suburb of Chicago, so it is realistic to assume that this is a “bedroom community”. This is where people work outside this community but live here. This is not the case for everyone though. There are many employment opportunities within this community. There are many local and small business put in through out the large retail stores. Most are one off places that carry specialty things. Others are local artists the sell clothes that show pride in the area. Being the third largest city in the state, there is just about anything you can think of and there are usually two of them. Politics What indicators do you see about politics? Posters? Headquarters ? Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. There were no indicators regarding politics observed through the windshield survey. Media Do you see indicators of what people read? Listen to the radio? Watch TV? Are there any signs of media language other than English ? Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. There were no indicators of what people like to read or watch on TV. There were a couple of advertisements for various TV shows, but this may not accurately portray what the community members themselves watch. As for radio, the only indication was hearing what other drivers were listening to in their cars. This ranged from country music to top 40 and 10

rock. Key Informants Interview a fireman or police office. Also interview a librarian, school teacher, school nurse or administrator. Ask each person interviewed to share their perceptions of the following and cite personal communication as appropriate : 1. Interview with fireman or police officer ˃ Community’s Health issues I spoke with officer A.F. of the Rockford Police Department. He lives in the neighboring city of Machesney Park. He states his biggest concern in the opioid epidemic that was starting to show it self on the far east and west sides of the city. He stated that all RPD officers are now required to carry Narcan due the epidemic (A.F., personal communication, April 11th, 2018).
