Some members complain about the amount of money they pay, how the money will be spent, and how it is allocated between national and local unions. Unions can often make decisions that all members must follow, regardless of personal opinion. Many unions are politically active at the local, state and national levels. Member dues pay for these efforts, even when a member has a differing view point. Some states have made provisions that members may opt out of that portion of their dues, but this has been the exception rather than the rule.
