Professor: Jacob Affolter that it is wrong, they are saying opposite things People who disagree about morality are not contradicting each other. They are trying to influence each other. People who disagree about morality are challenging whether the other person has understood his own moral principles. Fourth Objection Cultural relativism is practically self-defeating Cultural relativism turns everything into mush Arguments in favour of moral objectivism The coherence argument If a person claims that morality is not objective, then he is either making a moral claim or an objective factual claim If a person makes an objective factual claim, then he assumes that there is one objective obligation to believe and/or tell the truth So, if the claim that morality is not objective is an objective factual claim, then a person cannot believe it. Moral objectivism accounts for relativism Some things are relative, such as table manners If moral objectivism is true, then it is still possible that some things are relative Arguments against moral objectivity People have done terrible things because they falsely oppose the moral practices of other cultures People with strong moral commitments and obvious moral virtues There is no objective morality First objection Moral objectivism leads to moral absolutism If moral objectivism is true, then there are no moral absolutes There are no moral absolutes Therefore, objectivism is false Second objection Moral motivation undermines moral objectivity Beliefs cannot motivate people to act Third objection Moral objectivity supports intolerance Fourth objection Moral objectivity leads to oppression Without a belief in moral objectivity, we would not have oppression Witho[ut a belief in moral objectivity, we would not have large- scale atrocities Basic argument If people do not believe in objective moral truth, then it is difficult or impossible to get them to participate in atrocities. Fifth objection Moral disagreement undermines moral objectivity
