The financial implications for patients regarding the healthcare system of Great Britain are much less than those of the United States. The National Health System is largely funded through a general taxation, such as sales tax, duty tax, etc., and a smaller portion coming from the national insurance payroll tax. In 2016, every working individual paid approximately 13% of their annual income (Thorlby & Arora, 2016). Patients also need to pay the small copayment for their prescription drugs, and any services not covered by the universal healthcare. Therefore, out of pocket expenses are significantly smaller when compared to the United States. The downside to the NHS is the long wait times to receive services. Since it can take upwards of several weeks to see a GP, obtain tests, or get a referral for a specialist, potentially health problems can worsen leading to an increased financial cost for the patient in the form of more prescriptions or uncovered services.
