2) The nuclear charge (= # of protons) : atomic number 3) The nuclear mass (= # of protons + # of neutrons) : mass number The atomic number uniquely determines the chemistry of an atom ( and thus the element involved). Atoms with different mass numbers but the same atomic number are called isotopes of that element. Isotopes of an element differ mainly in their nuclear properties. Carbon-13 less stable than carbon 12 Compound: a substance consisting of two or more elements and whose chemical properties are distinct from those of its constituent elements. Molecule: two or more atoms bound to one another, Can involve atoms of the same element, yielding the molecular form of that element OR, If the atoms involved are of different elements, then the molecule formed is the fundamental unit of a compound.
