When I was there I didn’t see too much of that, but I saw that the Mardi Gras parade was more tailored to the foods and surprisingly the kids. The kids were the main event in the parade, for what I witnessed. I believe, with all of the alcohol and people, and bead throwing, that the celebration was more for the adults. However, I quickly learned that the holiday was more for family coming together and celebrating and having a good time before Lent. It was more of a celebration of life, and fellowship, the compared to mischievous, drunken parties, which most videos and movies have depicted. If I had the available time, I would definitely go back to Mardi Gras. This time, I will bring my whole family, as my conscious was a little waved at first, due to all of the media attention to the secular parts of the holiday. But after I experienced it for myself first hand, I wouldn’t mind bringing them with me. Researching this topic was very eye opening. Where, I thought I knew every little thing about the cultural holiday, I was proven wrong. I had no idea that Mardi Gras derived from ancient Pagan rituals and customs. I also learned that the traditions of Mardi Gras have roots from a lot of different religions, including Christianity. Mardi Gras, is also closely related to the carnival in Brazil, which I never knew for the longest time. I also 4
