3 Staff seem to have legitimate grievances about overwork and a climate of blame mk and punishment. 4 Dissatisfaction over rates of pay might stop if legitimate concerns are properly mk addressed. What can be learned from the findings? The survey findings suggest that staff are attracted to work for us because they view the work as interesting and relatively well-paid. However, the evidence indicates that the current low level of morale can probably be attributed to the lack of recognition that staff feel for their work. Remember: there is no one correct way to organise and write a report. Not every report will require conclusions. Or you may decide that it makes sense to combine findings and conclusions into one section. Perhaps conclusions and recommendations fit together in a single section? Use the language to say what you need to say. Don’t be a slave to it. 66 © CPBE 2019

This year staff morale is much higher. What can you conclude? Why is staff morale much higher this year? ................................................................................................................................ ................................................................................................................................ Situation B: Demand for your company’s services has fallen by 20% year-on-year. 3.7 The way forward: Recommendations Recommendations are practical suggestions to deal with the situation and ideas and making sure that future activities run more smoothly a) Making recommendations An effective recommendation is logically connected to the reason behind it: Since action has already been taken to address all three causes of complaints outlined above, I recommend that we aim for a very significant reduction in the next 3-month period to June. Task: Here are some other recommendations taken from a variety of reports. For each one: - find the reason for the recommendation, and link the two logically as in the example above - highlight the key structures used for making recommendations. Reason Recommendation 1 Demand for our products is very high at the moment. We should provide more language training opportunities for front-line staff. 2 The company is in danger of being prosecuted for copyright infringement. It is recommended that production be increased. 3 We need to improve our staff’s ability to communicate with non- Chinese customers. A staff development programme should be introduced. 4 We are losing staff to our competitors because many are unhappy about their career paths.
