adults o Research from 9 different labs showed that activity in this region decreases during adolescence Adolescents and adults use a different approach or cognitive strategy to make social decisions Study was done where you see items on a shelf and have to move items – director vs no director tasks o Director perspective – you need to remember to take into account director’s perspective o No director perspective – you only need to remember to ignore objects w/ grey background o Intelligent adults make errors about 50% of the time when there is a director present Make far fewer errors when there’s no director present o Same pattern in adults seen in people btwn late childhood and mid- adolescence There is continued improvement in the director condition – fewer errors in adulthood There is NO continued improvement in no director condition Ability to take into account someone else’s perceptive to guide behavior is still developing in mid & late adolescence Adolescents are particularly prone to taking risks when they’re w/ their friends o There’s an important drive to become independent from one’s parents and to impress one’s friends Limbic system – involved in things like emotion processing and reward processing o Involved in giving you the rewarding feeling from doing fun things and taking risks o Regions within limbic system have been found to be hypersensitive to rewarding feeling of risk-taking Prefrontal cortex stops us from taking excessive risks and continues to develop through adolescence
