Helping to deliver good healthand wellbeing in Olam operationsand rural communitiesLife expectancy in developing countriesremains low, compounded by poornutrition and lack of access tohealthcare. This is not justunacceptable for the affectedindividuals and their families, but hasa direct economic cost for theindividual and the country. In 2016, we continued to roll out theOlam Healthy Living Campaign.Teams in numerous countries heldsensitisation sessions on how toprevent malaria, diarrhoea and othercommon diseases. World Malaria Dayon 25 April was a focus of activity, andby the end of the year we had reached104,000 people in Africa withsensitisation, screening and treatments:•Republic of Congo Wood Productsteam, Congolaise Industrielle desBois, distributed treated mosquitonets to personnel•Côte d’Ivoire Cocoa and TanzaniaCoffee distributed nets to cocoacooperatives and their communities•Ghana Cocoa donated malariatreatment drugs to localhealth services. At our own large-scale palm andrubber plantations in Gabon, we havebuilt modern, well-equipped clinics(staffed by a permanent medical team)providing free healthcare to over6,500 employees.Ensuring access to safe waterand sanitationOlam is addressing water, sanitationand hygiene (WASH) access foremployees in the workplace, particularly in plantations in highly ruralemerging economies. Discussionswith other agri-business and forestrycompanies within the World BusinessCouncil for Sustainable Development(WBCSD) uncovered the need forfurther sector-specific WASH guidancein agricultural settings. To support the development of initialguidance and explore opportunities forbest practice development, a memberof the WBCSD’s water team undertooka 1-week learning mission to Olam’spalm oil plantations in Gabon inJune 2016.The plantations employ more than6,500 people, primarily from ruralvillages which have no running water.A baseline assessment was conductedin collaboration with local staff, mapping WASH provisions already putin place, and identifying action points.During the mission, it was revealed thata large part of absenteeism wasattributed to water-related andwater-borne diseases. The action points are being developedinto a work plan for implementationduring 2017, which will provideadditional focus on sanitation provision, along with employee awareness-raisingon hydration and heat stress.Encouraging employees to put theirhealth firstOur focus on health is not just for ruralcommunities. Increasingly, we see theimpacts of poor nutrition and sedentarylifestyles across both developed anddeveloping nations. In the USA, our team embraced the2016 World Health Day theme of BeatDiabetes, inviting a nutritionist to theoffice to speak about diabetes, launching a walking club, and hostinga ‘Hidden Sugar Demo’ unveiling thehigh sugar levels in the most commonlyconsumed foods.
