The Russian military invaded within minutes and crushed the Georgian military They then carved off these two little enclaves and then recognized their independence The Western world freaked out as Russian had broken all the rules even though that’s what they did in Kosovo Who are the true, biggest sovereignty supporters in today’s world o China  #1 supporter of sovereignty Even though they are tight allies with Russia, they would not even support them during the Georgian/Russian War o Russia, historically, used to be the biggest supporter of sovereignty Because it has the whole Chechnya issue in the Caucus area as well as other small ethnic enclaves, like Dagestan, looking for independence o Spain is a large fan of state sovereignty Because of the Basques

o Any state that has small ethnic enclaves looking to become independent are a fan of our current system o Also, states that just don’t really want to be messed with by international institutions of large are a big fan of state sovereignty trumping all too i.e. Sudan where a genocide might be occurring i.e. Burma where the dictatorship is smashing their own people i.e. Iran and even Korea Internationalism really pushes back against the state sovereignty supremacy idea o First by introducing the human rights bills and anti-genocide measures at the formation of the UN back in the 1940’s o Right on up until the late 1990’s when it started to become acceptable international military intervention into sovereign states to remedy injustices that were occurring solely within that state Sovereignty is also unraveling even further in our time with these worldwide, planetary wars of ideology o These are wars not a state fighting a state but wars of ideas that are occurring across the entire planet I.e. war on drugs or war on terrorism o These things are changing the whole equation Where will all of this lead? Are we working to a universal set of values, of human rights and liberties that will make the state sovereignty concept completely obsolete? State or Not a State Game Africa  Not a state because it’s a continent Tibet  Not a state but part of China Tajikistan  Yes, part of central Asian region Greenland  not a state but a territory or colony of Denmark Somalia  yes, it has nothing, no government or economy, no law or order but is a state because everyone recognizes it The Middle East  not a state but a region East Timor  one of the newest sovereign states as it was released from the Portuguese in Indonesia Palau  a little island in the pacific ocean but has recognition and is a state Kurdistan  not a state but they’ve been trying Lesotho  little chunk of area in south Africa and is a state Puerto Rico  not a state but isn’t really even a part of U.S. yet or any sovereign state Vatican City  it’s the smallest sovereign state on the planet earth because it has recognition
