5.b Though farmers do make a decent profit from the GE farming Monsanto still makes a
ridiculous amount of money off of these farmers while the farmers are still having to rely on
subsidies to make sure they break even. This truly is not ethically right, it goes against the
ethics
of care. Monsanto is the number one seed company in the world, they should be helping out the
farmers by paying them more because they can easily afford to but they are to stuck in the
ethics
of egoism and everything is all about them making money instead of helping others make money
as well. This is why subsidies are pushed so much because that is the best way for the farmer to
make their money.
6. The population in India is rapidly growing just like all over the world. This is causing a
huge food crisis. The farmers there are losing about 5 billion dollars a year due to pests and
disease invading there crops. This is along with being in a drought. (Karnik, 2016). It is believed
that the only way to help India is to give them the GE seeds that are pest resistant. Right now the
only GE crop there is cotton, Monsanto actually illegally snuck these seeds to India and they are
now the second largest cotton manufacture in the world. While it was intended to help India in
their crisis it was still ethically wrong to go and sneak these seeds with out there knowledge.
India is now being pushed to grow GE seeds to save their people from hunger. Even though it
was ethically wrong the
utilitarian ethics still comes into play here because there focus is to help
get India out of starvation and crop loss, what other way does Monsanto know how to help other
than to push GE food crops on them.
6.a It was talked about in
The Future of Food
that there is this new concept of seed
suicide that biotech companies are starting to produce. This is where the seed is able to be
planted through only one rotation then in a sense commits suicide and is no longer able to
produce anymore food, it’s a dead seed. This was a huge invention in order to make more money.

They are able to keep selling seeds because the farmer will need more for the new crop that is
going to be planted. This again goes directly to the
ethics of egoism. The companies are
pretending to care by helping sell them these great GE seeds that can with stand drought and
pests but then turn around and make sure they die after the first crop is harvested so that the
farmers have to go spend more money to get new seeds.
6.b It is said that we are going through a second green revolution. The first green
revolution was when there was a boom in staple crops after the Second World War. “The green
revolution today suggests a radical environmental movement…” (Pringle, 2003, p. 44). Because
of the first green revolution there was a lot of damage caused by agriculture chemicals and bad
drainage. This is what is leading us into this second green revolution of trying to change
agriculture into being as environmentally friendly as possible. This is all based off of the
