A portion of an existing groups splits away and forms a new ethnic group. 2. members of two or more ethnic groups fuse forming a new ethnic group 3. historical or political ways TYPES OF ETHNIC GROUPS Nationality – an ethnic group with a geographical region over which they have exclusive rights (homeland) Subnationality – an ethnic group that sees itself as a politically subordinate subset of a nathionality . Levels of Ethnic Identitiy Civilizations – groupings of distinct nationalities on the basis of a shared or common cultural historical tradition, most commonly a religious tradition VERY PROBLEMATIC Nationalities – ethnic groups who own, or feel they own, a homeloand in which they have exclusive rights0 Subnationalities – ethnic groups whose identities are nested within that of a larger national identity Transnational group – ethnic communites that are geographically separated from their homeland and live among members of another nationality Problem with stateless nationalities Jewish major population began returning to their historic homeland in Palestine in 1882 In 1948 the jewish settlers proclaimed the state of Israel In the war that followed, the arab league, Jordan, Egypt, and Iraq were defeated and Israelis gained control over most of the area west of the Jordan river and the Sinai.
