Presently, in my job as an administrative supervisor, I consider myself an expert nurse in this job. I am highly flexible and proficient in my job. I can anticipate when a situation is about to change and call for a meeting to plan ahead in order to prevent a disaster. However, as I work on my transition to become an advanced practice nurse, I consider myself a novice in the APN field due to lack of experience. Although I will be getting some practicum hours and experiences during my educational journey at Chamberlain College of nursing, I may not have the experiencethat will give me the confidence required to practice independently without support. It might be
APN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN5difficult in the beginning for me but hopefully, my education and practicum experience will better prepare me to become a highly efficient nurse practitioner. I believe that the strengths I have in my present job will help me to transition smoothly into my new job as an APN. Some of these strengths are: my ability to plan ahead. I like to be in control of things, I plan ahead so that I do not lose control when things seem to be getting difficult. I am also flexible and highly reliable which helps me in my relationship with my boss and colleagues. I have excellent communication skills and like to carry everyone along before and during crisis situations. These strengths have helped me so well in dealing with difficult situations at work because I let people know what to expect ahead of time and be prepared. I loveteam work, collaboration and above all, I like to make sure that every member of my team to have a role to play when we are working on an issue. I am someone who loves to learn new things, work well with people and treat everyone fairly and with respect. Even though I have identified my strengths, it is also imperative to discuss my weaknesses as this will help me to identify areas of improvement. One area that I will like to improve is my organizational skills. Although some of my colleagues tell me that I am organized,self-assessment has made me to realize that I am still lacking in some areas of organizational skill. I also need to be more assertive. Sometimes, it has taken me a longer time to make decisions because I want to please everyone. It is imperative for me to recognize that there are times when decisions have to be made quickly for better results irrespective of who is involved. My goal is to complete my post graduate masters’ degree, obtain my APN registration and certification and use my education and skills to donate some of my time in the community free clinic to help people with no insurance. Also, I will like to join an APN organization,
APN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN6especially, any APN organization which contributes positively towards the improvement of the APN practice in Ohio.
