Final Stage: Application The final stages of total quality management involve continual improvement, fact based decision making and constant communication within an organization (Pop, 2015). Once SMART principles have been identified and enacted an organization can move towards continuous improvement of those SMART goals through a practice known as PDCA; plan, do, check and act (Pop, 2015). The processes can be measured by management for effectiveness based on output data measurements such as reductions in overhead, improved productivity and increased customer satisfaction and retention. These measurements are then communicated to the various departments within the organization so that strategy can be developed to further improve processes for even greater results. INDIVIDUAL PROJECT 2 6 implemented total quality management techniques as set forth by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) (ASQ.org, n.d.). Automotive Toyota began using total quality management principals along with principals of kaizen since 1949 (Toyota Corporation, n.d.). The company has successfully utilized total quality management in problem solving and through the development of continues improvements in manufacturing and development of automobiles through the use of kaizen strategies (Toyota Corporation, n.d.). This customer centered approach to the designing and manufacturing of automobiles made Toyota one of the most sought after vehicles. Further application of total quality management for Toyota takes shape in the form of a process known as lean six sigma. Lean six sigma is a holistic approach to shifting the focus of improvement from method to process improvement with the focus being on production systems (Snee, 2009). These continuous improvements can be to the infrastructure of the organization, management, leadership development or culture of any organization (Snee, 2009). The methodology of lean six sigma focuses on the “deployment, execution for sustained process and organizational improvement” (Snee, 2009, p. 53). Logistics Logistics and transportation companies assess their performance through a variety of elements. Competitive logistics companies strive to delivery outstanding performance in the following categories; delivery time, delivery reliability, lead time, price and maturity of the invoice (Pavolova, & Tobisova, 2013).
