Shortly after they let Matata go, Kanzi showed signs of knowing what they were teaching Matata for those two years. In no time he was using the keyboard to show what he knew and could name objects. Knowing that Terrace made a mistake, Rumbaugh didn’t want the same thing to happen with Kanzi. They put Kanzi in a room with two of the researchers and gave him tasks to do, they had gone out and bought objects just for this test. From outside of the room with all the objects and the two researchers, Sue told Kanzi to have the dog bite the snake. Kanzi picked up the toy snake and the dog, put the snake in the dog’s mouth and shut the dog’s mouth as if it were biting the snake. They did a few more things along those lines and almost every time Kanzi did exactly what he was told. He never saw any of the objects before but associated the words with the toys. He knew about 70% of the things he was told to do. The final conclusion was that Kanzi comprehended everything he knew just from observation and understood what things meant without being told exactly what to grab.
Even though the start of getting apes to understand the human language was very rough, the research keeps on progressing more and more as time goes on. We have learned that apes are a lot like humans. They learn faster if they start at a young age, just like toddlers. Over time we will get better and better at understanding these creatures and be able to talk to them without any problems.
