Dichromate oxidizes organic and inorganic matter in the sample, and it is reduced from Cr+ 6 to Cr+ 3 . The test is performed at 150 °C under total reflux for 2 hours. After digestion, excess potassium dichromate is titrated with the Mohr salt using ferroin as indicator. The solution color changes from green to red. The COD values of sample 1 and sample 2 were found to be ___ and ___ respectively. It is said that a reduction in DO could result in anaerobic conditions, which would harm higher aquatic life forms[3].

As a precaution step, blank procedures were performed to eliminate traces of organic material. Other than that, Mercuric sulfate was also added to prevent chloride interference. Possible source of error could be due to some organic molecules such as benzene and pyridine bring relatively resistant to dichromate oxidation and may give a falsely low COD[4].
