Ali 3 Loss of Opportunities A primary reason on how mass incarceration has negatively impacted minorities in society is because it has made it harder for those who have been in the system to get opportunities to better their life when they come home. This is a common thing for minorities who have been locked up. They miss out on once in a lifetime opportunities and later feel regret because they know they would have bettered their life but they got caught up in the system. Minorities have always been blamed for most of the crimes that go on in society. As a result, they don’t get to advocate for themselves because the systems voice is always louder than those who are the minority in society. They don’t get a chance to really fight for their freedom instead they have to roll over and do what the system has told them to do and after they have served their time they miss out on opportunities. It is a never ending cycle for them. To understand this issue we need to know how this cycle begins. It starts with them getting caught up in the wrong scene. Minorities are often charged for crimes that have to do with drugs. They then have to go through the court process to hear what the judge is going to tell them regarding their case. In most cases, the minorities are given longer sentences compared to those who have committed the same crime because minorities get labelled as a whole, so what one person does affects the minorities as one unit. After they do their time, they come home and don’t get a chance to catch up with others and thus leads to them missing out on opportunities that would overall better their life. For example in the article “ Mass Incarceration Is One of the Most Pressing Civil Rights Issues Today” it says what exactly they miss out on and how it affects them. It states, hyperincarceration has led to disproportionate effects on black employment outcomes and earnings, families, and citizenship status. In fact, although low-skilled white male employment is hurt by an incarceration, research has found that previously incarcerated low-

Race is a major factor in mass incarceration among minorities. In most cases, a white person has a better chance at pursuing a normal lifestyle than those who are colored There is more to it than just missing out on employment opportunities. When a person comes home after serving their sentence they find it harder to live a normal life like a normal person.
