time on their hands. This development created what we call “leisure time”. It was like a new business was created for entertainment. People could go to the movies, take a long drive, go to the mall, etc. This kind of modernization changed Paris dramatically, which is where realism began. The old and medieval streets of Paris transformed into a flourishing urban center that was filled with wide boulevards, parks, shopping areas and multi-class dwellings. Therefore, creating the modern time that included social mixing, social mobility, frequent journeys from city to the country and back, and generally speaking – every part of life changed to be fast paced. This modernization is crucial in the realism movement and development of Gustav Courbet’s artwork.

Gustav Courbet’s painting, The Artist’s Studio; A real allegory summing up seven years of my artistic and moral life, is an artwork that is a great example of a realism piece that rebelled against traditional standards and previous art movements. At the center of the painting is 3 characters – the artist, his muse, a boy and a cat. The artist is sitting admiring his painting. However, it is odd that the muse, is not being painted as she stands naked. The artist and muse are looking at the artist’s work that appears to be a landscape. The boy is also gawking at the artist’s work with admiration. The boy admiring the artist’s work is referencing Courbet’s realism style of painting. The boy is admiring a landscape painting and not a painting that serves
