learn to control ourselves It is those who are not properly socialized or emotionally developed as a child that are missing such control thus may become delinquent Three elements of a personality Id Unconscious, irrational, antisocial, and instinctual impulses Should be controlled and shaped for society Ego Conscious and rational mind Superego Conscious and moral part of the mind Freud: psychopaths have unresolved deep-seated problems Psychopaths, sociopaths, or antisocial personalities No guilt No sense of right and wrong No subjective conscience Difficult in forming relationships with others Unable to emphasize with others Example: Serial Killers Ted Bundy: handsome and intelligent law student who murdered several females that resemble an ex-girlfriend who broke up with him Jeffery Dahmer: murdered and rapes approximately 17 men and boys Characteristics of the Psychopath 1. Superficial charm and good “intelligence” 2. Absence of delusions and other signs of irrational “thinking” 3. Absence of “nervousness” or psychoneurotic manifestations 4. Unreliability 5. Untruthfulness and insincerity 6. Lack of remorse or shame 7. Poor judgment 8. Failure to learn by experience 9. Pathologic egocentricity and incapacity for love 10. General poverty in major affective reactions 11. Specific loss of insight 12. Unresponsiveness in general interpersonal relations 13. Fantastic and uninviting behavior, with drink and sometimes without 14. Suicide rarely carried out 15. Sex life impersonal, trivial, and poor integrated 16. Failure to follow any life plan
